Typeface, typesize, whitespace or negative space, capitals or lowercase... What are the rules of graphic design and are there any?
There is big excitement in the design world since David Carson announced his work on a new book "the rules of graphik design." Finally, on Facebook, Carson announces; his work is finished and is waiting for a publisher.
David Carson is considered the rule breaker in the design world and has changed the face of design back in the 90's. Carson's work has always been experimental, it makes you think that there are no rules in graphic design. The new book title itself is controversial for the author.
Change is constant in the design world, moreover with the new technical influences sometimes design becomes guided by a certain technique. The "wet floor" effect is being used over and over in online design, soon it will be associated with "Web 2.0" movement.
Whatever rules we actually apply, the most important point is to stay true to the concept rather than flashing trend techniques. Thoughtful design doesn't date as easy and stays timeless.
If you don't have any rules for graphic design then there is hope to find one or more in the upcoming book "the rules of graphik design".
